Hello Beauty,
It’s been a little while since we have written to you, that’s because we have been busy working behind the scenes to develop new content that will help you on your healing journey.
Today we want to talk to the elephant in the room, New Year’s Resolutions.
By now, the excitement of the new year has likely worn off, and if you’re like most people, the resolutions you set with so much enthusiasm have either fizzled out or feel like a distant memory. I know, I’ve been there too, setting yourself up for exciting change, then feeling defeated because you didn’t stick to the promise you made to yourself, I get it.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Research shows that around 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail, often by February. But before you fall into the trap of self-blame, let’s explore why this happens and, more importantly, how to move forward to create real, lasting change.
Why Resolutions Fail
1. Unrealistic Expectations:
Many resolutions are set with the mindset of achieving perfection. “I’ll work out every single day” or “I’ll never eat junk food again” are noble goals but often set us up for failure because they don’t account for life’s unpredictability.
2. Lack of Specificity:
Vague resolutions like “I’ll be healthier” or “I’ll save more money” don’t provide a clear direction. Without measurable steps, it isn’t easy to track progress or feel motivated.
3. Relying Solely on Motivation:
Motivation can be a powerful spark, but it’s fleeting. When life gets busy or challenges arise, relying on motivation alone often leads to giving up.
4. All-or-Nothing Thinking:
The moment we slip up, it’s easy to feel like we’ve failed. This mindset often leads to abandoning resolutions altogether, rather than seeing setbacks as part of the process.
The Opportunity for a Fresh Start
The good news is that the end of a resolution doesn’t mean the end of your goals. In fact, now is the perfect time to reframe and rethink your approach. Forget the all-or-nothing mentality—lasting change doesn’t come from grand declarations but from small, intentional actions over time.
How to Create Real, Lasting Change
1. Start Small and Focus on One Thing at a Time:
Rather than trying to overhaul your entire life, choose one specific area to focus on. For example, instead of vowing to “get fit,” start with walking for 10 minutes a day or doing one workout per week. Small wins build momentum.
2. Set Process-Oriented Goals:
Shift your focus from the outcome to the habits that will lead you there. Instead of aiming to “lose 10 kilograms,” focus on preparing healthy meals at home or reducing sugary drinks. These are actions you can control, and they’ll lead to progress over time.
3. Be Flexible and Forgiving:
Life isn’t perfect, and neither are you. If you miss a day, week, or even month of your goals, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. The ability to adjust and start again is far more valuable than sticking rigidly to a plan.
4. Find Your ‘Why’:
Resolutions often fail because they’re based on external pressure or fleeting inspiration. Take time to identify why a goal matters to you on a deeper level. For example, instead of exercising because you feel you “should,” connect it to a bigger purpose, like having more energy for your family or improving your mental health.
5. Track Progress, Not Perfection:
Celebrate small milestones and keep track of your efforts, whether it’s writing in a journal, using a habit tracker, or simply reflecting weekly. Progress is more motivating than perfection.
6. Build Accountability:
Share your goals with someone you trust, join a supportive group, or find a coach or mentor. Accountability helps you stay on track and keeps you motivated when your willpower dips.
It’s Never Too Late to Start Again
Resolutions may come and go, but the desire to improve yourself doesn’t have to wait until January 1. The key is recognizing that change is a journey, not a single decision. Whether it’s January, July, or any other time of the year, you can always recommit to your goals with a new approach.
If you’ve fallen off track, don’t see it as failure—see it as feedback. Now you know what doesn’t work, and you can move forward with a smarter, more sustainable plan. Lasting change doesn’t happen in a moment. It’s built one step at a time.
