This subject is really close to home so I feel it’s important to write about it. 

I remember when I was experiencing one of the many dark knights of the soul (I like to call them painful growth spurts).  This one particular event I was really stuck, I was deep down the rabbit hole, I was in a rut and I couldn’t seem to shift out of it.

The pain was so excruciating I had to make a shift and the only thing I thought to do was to shift my thinking so I decided to start with a simple strategy of daily gratitude.

I remember the first day I started with the gratitude, it was like pulling teeth, it was so difficult to find anything to be grateful for (remember I was deep down the rabbit hole) so I started with the really basic fundamental (survival) things like shelter, food and the air that I breathe. 

To be honest the gratitude I was giving at the time felt empty without any real depth because I was really struggling to find things that I was grateful for in my life, even though I had so much to be grateful for, what we focus on grows, right?

In my experience, if we’re not focusing on the good (being appreciative, giving gratitude) we’re focusing on the things that we think are the negative parts of our lives and as a result, we will get more of that, it’s all about the thoughts that are going on in our minds.

So, through this transformational process, I decided to change my way of thinking, switching from a negative mindset to a positive one. 

So, to keep myself accountable I decided to do a gratitude journal for 365 days consecutively, posting every day online.

Over that 365 days my life had profound transformations, I became seemingly overnight phenomenally abundant in all areas of my life. I couldn’t believe the transformation that my life took, and I up leveled on so many different areas in my life. Not only was my relationship abundant my relationships with my family and friends, my business was more abundant, my material life was more abundant, everything expanded and exploded.

I remember getting to the end of the 365 days and completing the commitment but I didn’t make a further commitment to continue that daily gratitude.  This is the mistake I made, as many do, I stopped doing the very thing that brought me the abundance.  Like a diet right, we lose weight and we think we can go back to normal and keep the weight off, nope, you have to keep doing the very thing that got you there.  Use it or lose it.

So what happened is, my life started to spiral out of control, down a very slippery slope, pretty quickly too, because, I stopped focusing on what I appreciated, what I was giving gratitude for, the negativity started to creep in and became the primary focus seemingly overnight.  Until one day it hit me what I had done.  Gratitude and appreciation are so phenomenally powerful and it has the power to amplify what you focus on.  Our lives can be incredibly abundant or woefully lacking and it all depends on our minds and what we focus on. 

The simple practice of gratitude really is the secret to an abundant life.  What you focus on becomes your life.
