How do your past patterns and trauma responses sabotage your current reality, and what to do about it?

We operate mostly unconsciously until we shine a light on those elements and make them conscious, therefore making us aware.

This also applies to our past patterns. We may not be aware of these until we are shown, and awareness created.  Unfortunately, many of us become aware of this through experiencing pain and suffering, which is brought on by these subconscious patterns playing out.

So what can we do about this?

We can start by moving the looking glass onto our patterns in our interpersonal relationships.  Ask what keeps showing up for me that I’m not happy with.

This could be in the form of constant conflict, breakups, infidelity, sabotaging behaviors such as excessive drinking, shopping, stress and overwhelm causing angry outbursts and anxiety, and the list goes on.

First, we want to start with the self enquirer, asking, what am I unhappy with?  Why is this happening?  What doesn’t feel great in my life?  How do I feel? How do I want to feel? How am I showing up?

Self-inquiry, and self-monitoring are perfect ways to start shining a light on elements we may need to create awareness of, which could be playing havoc with our lives.

When we are aware, then we empower ourselves to change and to start to understand what is playing out, and why.

We can then start to implement healthy patterns that support us, therefore promoting better interpersonal relationships and less self-sabotage.

This process helps us to stop self-sabotage before it gets in the way of things that are meaningful to us, like our relationships, our health and wellness, finances, and business or careers.

If you’d like to start exploring your patterns, you can start by keeping a daily journal, using the prompts outlined below each time you feel triggered, confronted, or a negative thought pops up:

What happened?

How does that make me feel?

What is the evidence that this is true? …

Have I confused a thought with a fact?

What would I tell a friend if he/she had the same thought?

What if I looked at this differently?

What could go right?

What can I be grateful for in this moment?
